There are many magical items insideD&D. From Bags of Holdings to Vorpal Swords, there are plenty of cool artifacts, weapons, and miscellaneous items you can use in your quests.
In fact, there are so many that figuring out which ones to include in your campaign can be a bit overwhelming.
In this article, we'll go a little deeperrare magic itemsspecifically.
Looking at this rarity level, we will talk about the 15 coolest, most powerful and interesting items in 5e.
Top 15 Rare Magic Items
The following items are not in any particular order. When it comes to classifying magic items, each is good for its own reason.
Since there's no point in comparing a weapon to an armor or a wand to a cape, this list is just a handful of star-studded items.
Weapon (Long Sword), Rare (needs tuning)
OnSunblade is the hilt of a longswordwhich generates a blade of pure radiant energy when you want the blade to do so as a bonus action. It is a +2 magic longsword with the finesse property.
That alone is pretty awesome, but this sword also does radiant damage instead of slashing and an extra 1d8 if it attacks undead.
The ability to cast bright light 10 to 30 feet and dim light another 10 to 30 feet is also impressive, but it doesn't come close to the combat bonuses it has.
Having a magical weapon is awesome, and radiation damage makes it even better. There will be few creatures that can withstand the incredible damage dealt by this bad boy.
Not to mention that this sword can be used by almost anyone who uses a gun. If you have skills inshort swordsor long swords, then you will master this great weapon.
The versatility and impressive damage of this weapon make it an easy choice for one of the best rare magic items.
Weapon (Any Sword), Rare (needs tuning)
This weapon may not be as versatile as the Sunblade, but it's incredibly powerful and deserves a spot on this list.
The weapon is any sword, but when you say its command word as a bonus action, it ignites, engulfing the blade in flames.
This magical weapon deals an additional 2d6 fire damage to any target. Even targets that are immune to fire damage will take extra damage, making it much better than your average sword.
Once again, this weapon can be used by almost anyone who is skilled in fencing. The only thing it doesslightlyLess impressive than Sunblade is that it's not a fragile weapon.
Rogues can get around this by finding a Flame Tongue rapier, but if your DM doesn't think of it, you won't be able to deal extra stealth or fire damage with this beautiful magical weapon.
Ring for storing spells
Ring, rare (needs tuning)
If you haven't had the pleasure of dealing with spell storage rings, I hope that will change soon.
These items can contain up to 5 levels of spells that the user can cast at any time.
This allows for very interesting strategy games and can be as important in some campaigns as the reserve pool.
The way it works is that the spellcaster casts a level 1-5 spell while holding the ring.
The "up to five levels" bit works with simple math. Two first-level spells and one third-level spell equal five spell levels, and so on.
When a spell is cast, the user is considered the caster, but the stats of the person who originally saved the spell are used for the actual casting.
This means you can give a Hold Monster ring to a fighter with incredibly high stamina and let them cast it on the big bad.
The defense will be against whoever rolls it in your party, but the fighter can make all concentration saves along the way.
And so on and so forth. Just giving fighters access to healing or utility spells is an amazing bonus.
Truly, it is one of the most powerful magical items that exist. It's good that the maximum spell level is 5, otherwise it's probably the highestinsidefull article 5e.
potion of maximum power
This may seem like an interesting option for one of the best magic items. It's a potion, which means it will be a single-use item. Fortunately, it's powerful enough to make it really worth it this once.
After drinking this potion, the first damage spell you cast at level 4 or below deals the maximum possible damage. Level 4 fireball deals 54 damage per target.
If you pick up this weapon, use it wisely and you will surely understand why it was chosen for this list of items.
Necklace with fireballs
A wonderful, rare thing
The fireball necklace has three to nine beads.
When you take these beads out of the necklace and throw them, they will explode like the third level.Fire ballwith a save DC of 15. That alone is impressive.
What makes it even more deadly is that you can cast multiple at the same time, increasing the enchantment level by 1 for each additional number.
Realistically, you'll do a lot more damage throwing them one at a time (and you'll be able to keep the necklace for more than one encounter), but sometimes you just want to throw the necklace for a level 9 cast. a fireball that surpasses anything your team can offer in the next 10 game levels.
Yes, it's a dangerous item, not for the faint of heart.
Daern's Instant Fortress
A wonderful, rare thing
You know what, I think it's crazy that I haven't seen this on any other list.
Daerna's Instant Fortress is a 1-inch metal dice that can be rolled and given a command word to create a 30-foot square fortress with 20-foot sides.
The keep has two floors, embrasures and battlements at the top, a full nine.
What was not to love?
Well, if you're an enemy, the fact that it deals 10d10 smash damage to anyone who misses a dex and had the misfortune of being in the space of this fortress when it was created might be something you don't like.
This fortress is really cool and a great way to get a tactical advantage, but it's also a very quick, spell-free way to deal a ridiculous amount of damage in a single action.
Helmet of the Gods
Rare Miracle Item (requires tuning)
It is a helmet that allows you to know the location of any celestial or demon within 30 feet of you.
It's not a huge advantage, but the real ticket is that it gives you access to a different spell each day, one you can cast up to three times.
All of the gods listed are from Theros as it is a Theros item, but if you are playing the Forgotten Realms or any other campaign setting, you can easily swap the gods for their counterparts in other pantheons.
The spells are all pretty fantastic, and considering you don't have to cast any spells, they're a great addition for anyone not casting or casting looking for a magical boost.
dragon wing bow
Weapon (Any Bow), Rare (needs tuning)
This has got to be one of my new favorite weapons in 2021. This is a magical bow that deals an additional 1d6 of certain types of bow damage.
These damage types are related to Chromatic, Metal or Gem dragons and can be anything from acid, cold, fire, force, lightning, necrosis, poison, medium, radiant or thunder.
This is all except drilling, punching or cutting!
That's great, and pushing is definitely the best option, but that may change for your campaign. But wait! There's more!
If you don't have ammo, don't worry! You can pull the string, and the bow will simply create magical ammo especially for you. There are also no restrictions, so you can do it as much as you want.
A great power figure
Ok, there are a lot of them, so I'll try to hold back. These figurines are small animal statues to which you can speak a command word to summon an animal.
Each figurine summons a different animal, and each animal functions a little differently. There are only two of them that are not rare (one very rare and one rare).
Short and sweet, these articles can do a lot of great things.
From a giant owl you can fly to summon three giant goats, one of which terrifies the creatures around it, you can make many situations in and out of combat go exactly how you want them to.
Rare Miracle Item (requires tuning)
The hover layer is a very simple element that is extremely powerful. Gives your opponent a disadvantage on attack rolls against you.
The way it does this is by projecting an illusion that makes it look like you're standing somewhere close to your actual location.
I'd say it's the perfect item for any character that doesn't want to get hit, but that's pretty much everyone. So you got it.
cube of forces
Rare Miracle Item (requires tuning)
The full text of this article is quite long, so I'll try to shorten it.
This cube has 36 charges that you can use to create one of five effects by pressing one of its sides (the sixth side deactivates the cube). Pages one through five create a 15 cubic foot barrier of force focused on you.
Each other effect costs a number of charges (1-5), with the least effective barrier costing 1 charge and the most effective 5.
It gets a little complicated, but that's the point. This die basically allows you to roll a different versionwall of strengthseveral times a day.
Since it doesn't require concentration, it may even be better than thatwall of strengthin many scenarios.
Its versatility also allows you to use it effectively. Low cost charges will block gases and 5 charges will prevent absolutely nothing.
Rare Miracle Item (requires tuning)
I was going to put this in the class-specific section, but there are more than one class that can benefit from no-shield bonuses.
These pauldrons give +2 to AC when you are not wearing armor or a shield. Monks, barbarians, wizards and a few other wizards will greatly benefit from this.
It can even be a good game for breeds like the naturally armored turtle. No matter how these shoulder pads are in your possession, they will give you a massive AC buff.
A wonderful, rare thing
You may notice that this item does not require tuning. That's the first thing I want you to pay attention to.
Most of the items we cover need to be refined, limiting them to single-player use. Instead, it can jump from the party to anyone who needs it.
On what it actually does...
This layer allows the user to throwgate dimension, a spell that allows you and a willing creature to teleport up to 500 feet to any location. This can be done once a day and refreshes at sunrise.
teleportationIt is huge on all pillarsD&D. This is a skill that is basically impossible to abuse; it will see the value 90% of the time when you run that layer's action.
Armor (light, medium or heavy), rare (requires tuning)
This armor provides resistance to all types of non-physical damage.
I like to have a catalog of them in an armorer's shop in a bustling city, giving players the option to choose what stamina they really want.
Different resistances are useful in different campaigns, so how you use them depends entirely on the game you're playing.
One thing is for sure, you can never go wrong with damage resistance.
A wonderful, rare thing
Who would I be if I didn't put a chaotic position on my ranking list?
The bean bag may not be incredibly powerful, but with 3d4 beans and a random table with 12 different effects, you're sure to bring some really exciting elements into your game.
The best doesn't necessarily mean the most powerful, and this magical little bag can be the catalyst for your entire adventure.
I mean, you can literally make a beanstalk that extends into another plane of existence. Do you know how many stories are based on the simple Jack and the beanstalk archetype? That's a lot.
Here are some of my favorite bean bag effects from official 5e and homebrew tables:
- Animated and motionless, a stone statue stands in your likeness. Threats verbally at your address. If you leave him and others around, he will describe you as the most heinous villain and direct the novices to find you and attack you. If you are on the same plane of existence as the statue, it knows where you are. The statue becomes inanimate after 24 hours.
- The 60-square-foot pyramid explodes upward. Inside there is a sarcophagus containing a mummy lord (stats can be found in the Book of Monsters). The pyramid is treated as the lair of the mummy lord, and its sarcophagus contains a treasure chosen by the DM.
- One minute after planting in the ground, a planter clone spawns. The clone's motivation is left to the discretion of the DM.

As a child, I was often told to stick my head out of the clouds and stop living in a fantasy world. I never really liked it so I decided to make a living playing games, stories and all kinds of fantastic works. Now as an adult, I try to remind people that sometimes a little fantasy is all you need when life gets too hard.
