Create a wall of fire on a hard surface within range. You can build a wall up to 60 feet long, 20 feet high, and 1 foot thick, or a ring wall up to 20 feet in diameter, 20 feet high, and 1 foot thick. The wall is opaque and lasts all the time.
When a wall appears, each creature in its area must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 5d8 fire damage, or half that on a successful save.
One side of the wall you choose when you cast this spell deals 5d8 fire damage to any creature that ends its turn within 10 feet of that side or within the wall. The creature takes the same damage when it enters a wall for the first time in a turn or ends its turn there. The other side of the wall does no damage.

What is a wall of fire??
Wall of Fire is a powerful battlefield control spell, one of the many "wall" spells available in 5e. The spell allows you to create a simple wall or ring of fire that deals damage to created creatures whenever they enter its area of effect or each time they end their turn within its area of effect.
A common misconception about this spell, and spells in general, is that it follows a description of similar spells. This is very false. While other wall enchantments, such as Wall of Power, allow you to set up a wall in any configuration of a set of panels, this wall gives you two options for creating an enchantment.
Players often try to turn the wall into a series of zigzags for the greatest tactical advantage, but this spell just doesn't work. As Jeremy Crawford would say, if the spell was going to do that, it would have said so in the description.
Still, the range of options is quite wide, because you can make a walluntil60 feet long, 20 feet high and 1 foot thick,oin the ringuntil20 feet in diameter, 20 feet in height and 1 foot in thickness. The math works quite well here because the circumference of a 20-foot diameter ring is actually 62 feet.

Who can cast Wall of Fire??
Wall of Fire is a spell available in the Druid, Wizard, and Wizard spell lists. It is also available to clerics of the domains of light and forges, patron warlocks of the Celestial or Fiends, and artillery craftsmen subclass.
If you take the Prismari Student strixhaven experience as a class with spellcasting or pact magic, that spell is one of ten in your school's spell list.
This is also available through the elemental discipline River of the Hungry Fire, a subclass option for a level 17 monk of the Way of the Four Elements subclass. You must spend 5 ki to cast this spell this way.
When and where should I launch Wall of Fire??
- As a defensive barrier

This is one of the simpler wall spells that just creates a damage barrier at the end of the day. Any creature willing to take such damage will easily do so by breaking through the barrier.
Still, setting this up will be extremely useful if there are a lot of creatures to put a line between.
As far as defensive barriers go, this is certainly weak. Realistically it isoffensivebarrier because it does little to stop opponents. Other wall spells can block ranged attacks, spells, and even creatures from getting through while that only deals damage. This fits very well with the saying "the best defense is a good attack".
All that said, 5d8 fire damage is nothing to make fun of. Casting this spell at full range can allow you to create a fire damage barrier that is essentially 600 square feet or 24 squares on the battlefield. That's a lot of damage it seems, and more if any creature decides to interact with it.
This spell gives you a chance to be very strategic, especially if you understand a bit of geometry. Let's look at a battle that takes place in a long tunnel or passage that is 20 feet wide and 15 feet high.
This mirrors the fairly standard layout of some classic dungeon excavations. There are several ways in which this spell will work on you if you are ambushed and rushed into the fray.
The first simple solution is to create a barrier directly in front of you and your team, creating a nice little volley of fire and deterring attackers. Unfortunately, this does not allow you to fully utilize the spell's power as you only create a 20 by 15 foot barrier. That's like a quarter of the total capacity.
Instead of throwing the barrier perpendicular to the aisle, throw it straight across the entire aisle. This creates a large area of effect that creatures will have to walk through to get to you instead of just walking 10 feet.
His wall of fire now creates two options: go through an incredibly long area of fire damage, or go through a safe passage that is only 10 feet wide. It's an excellent torrent, and if you manage to do something like that, you're all set.
Of course, you can also do a diagonal action by splitting a tunnel, room, or whatever area you're in to create the best situation for you and your allies.
In short, don't look for a simple solution when choosing where to cast this spell, make the most of whatever situation you find yourself in. Consider how throwing does the most damage.
I also specified to avoid throwing this around demons. This applies to all creatures with fire resistance or resistances. If you have any knowledge of enemies' damage resistance, be careful what spells you cast, it's just a general rule of thumb.
Since Wall of Fire has no secondary effects, casting creatures that won't take much damage is a pretty sad choice.
Why should I take Wall of Fire?
You should take Wall of Fire if you're a caster who focuses on control-based spells or element-based spells. There are plenty of other more impressive tier 4 focus spells out there, so this is a really good option to add to your spell lists and builds to complement them.
There are many control spells that go well with this. If you can apply any status like stun, scare or restraint that affects the creature's movement, you have a great partner here. Anything that can force a creature to spend more turns within Wall of Fire's hit area is a sure hit.
You can also team up with another caster on your team if you want to break two focus spells at once. Combining this with the Hold Monster allows you and your ally to put the minion in a position where it will take a lot of damage for several turns, especially if you manage to land some ranged shots.
Of course, it's also a powerful fire damage spell, so elemental builds, especially those with the Elemental Adept feat, will make this spell that much stronger each time you break it.
Other options similar to Wall of Fire
There are quite a few spells similar to this as there are many spells that allow you to create walls. All of these spells have slightly different abilities and fall into the same general spell archetype.
Some wall spells create dangerous terrain, others block spells, and some can even be used for much more impressive tactical maneuvers, allowing you to create a series of panels instead of a straight line.
Wind Wall, level 3
Deals bludgeon damage to minions. Stops the passage of projectiles and small or smaller flying creatures.
Water wall, third level
There is a downside to giving ranged spells. Passing fire spells are halved. Cold spells that pass freeze part of the wall, creating a solid barrier of ice.

Blocks line of sight and blinds creatures in the area of effect. Movement through the affected area also costs 3 feet for every 1 foot of movement.
wall of power, level 5
Blocks all travel, even ethereal, through the wall. It can consist of several sections, creating a variety of "walls". You can even use this to create a cube around the creature and trap it.

Creates a multi-panel stone barrier that becomes permanent if you maintain concentration for the duration of the spell. it's great to createlabyrinths.
Ice wall, level 5
Deals cold damage on creation, then creates a solid barrier. If part of the barrier is destroyed, creatures can pass through it, but will take cold damage.
Wall of Light, level 5
Deals radiating and blinding damage when spawning. It also allows you to fire projectiles of light (radiation damage) as ranged spell attacks in subsequent turns.
Wall of Thorns, level 6
Deal piercing damage to a creature. Passing through the affected area is difficult terrain, and creatures that move through space take slash damage.
